As managers attempt to get clarity on the true impact of Brexit on their businesses moving forward, the British Chamber continues to bring together experts and gather information to provide all its members and the business community at large, updated and reliable information to help businesses operate.
The Transition Period expired at midnight (CET) on 31 December 2020, and the United Kingdom became a third country to all effects as far as the European Union is concerned.
The long discussed and awaited “deal” was concluded almost at the last minute. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement, a complex and unwieldy tome of over 1000 pages, establishes the rules and guidelines for trade between the 27 Member States and the United Kingdom and sets out paths to further discussions and negotiations. In addition, the UK and EU were able to agree a protocol for Northern Ireland to govern the manner in which the UK’s only land border with the EU will be handled.
The existence of the deal is clearly positive, the full ramifications of the “deal and the UK’s new third country status will only become apparent over time.
We at the BCCI will continue to monitor the evolution of the new relationship engendered by Brexit and will keep our members up to date with the consequences for trade and business.
