Global sustainability challenges – poverty, climate change, racial, gender and economic inequality, biodiversity loss, etc. – are undermining the well-being of our planet and its people. The Covid19 pandemic is aggravating many of them, affecting the most vulnerable – the elderly, the poor and women – disproportionately. But as injustice exists, so does opportunity and the private sector can be a (big) part of the solution.

Governments’ and non-profit’s efforts to advance sustainable development are crucial but lack the resources to change course alone. This is where the role of corporations come in. If we could make our corporations accountable to a deeper purpose, we would make capitalism both prosperous and good for people and planet.

Unfortunately, whereas corporate leaders may aspire to virtue, they are bound by a fiduciary duty to maximize profits. They often face conflicting demands between stakeholders’ requests to do good and shareholders’ pressure for maximising quarterly results. This is where the role of finance comes in. The world needs longterm socially conscious investing to allow corporate leaders to truly pursue the triple bottom line – people, planet and profits -.

And this is where the role of women comes in. Numerous studies demonstrate that more women in finance leads to more socially conscious investing, in addition to greater financial stability and better risk management. Women tend to think holistically and consider how they can make a lasting impact in the world, without disregarding financial performance.

This is why the world needs finance and finance needs women: to inspire sustainable business practices and build a fairer and greener future. We have an unmissable opportunity to build a gender-equal society where everybody stands to gain.
