Our social and economic model is not sustainable. It relies on fossil fuels and the relentless extraction of raw materials. It disregards externalities, allowing companies to unload the cost of pollution to society. It often confuses price with value. It undervalues diversity and equality. Its pitfalls – such as the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and economic inequality –are undermining the well-being of our planet and its people.
But as injustice exists, so does opportunity and the financial sector can be a big part of the solution. As an industry, impact investing drives the flow of much-needed capital towards solutions to the most critical social and environmental challenges. The industry has made great progress in generating a robust and diverse set of impact investing funds, targeting every impact theme, geography and asset class. However, it is still generating a fraction of the impact required to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and global climate targets.
In our 2nd impact investing session, we will host 3 special impact investors to discuss what constitutes credible impact investing practice and how the industry could be scaled to achieve greater impact without losing its integrity.
